Limburg University Fund donates €250,000 to UM for research

12th April 2012

Theo Bovens, chair of the Limburg University Fund, pledged a €250,000 donation for research during the annual Maastricht University Dinner yesterday evening. The research will be conducted by Brains Unlimited BV, a company formed by a collaboration between UM, the MUMC+ and the Province of Limburg.

A scanner lab is currently being built in Randwyck to facilitate this research. The University Fund’s financial contribution to the Brains Unlimited Pioneer Fund is essential to achieving these research ambitions and increasing the likelihood of obtaining additional subsidies and spinoffs.

The Maastricht research group is an international leader in the field of (brain) imaging. The expectations of UM and the MUMC+ are therefore extremely high regarding the exciting research opportunities these devices could offer in terms of (brain) diseases. Brains Unlimited is one of the key initiatives of the Maastricht Health Campus profile. In addition to UM and the MUMC+, various companies will also be using the laboratory. This will ultimately lead to the Maastricht Health Campus being firmly embedded as a leading expertise centre while spinoff activities will provide permanent employment for Maastricht and the region.

The Limburg University Fund is a foundation that has supported Maastricht University in its research and education ambitions in order to further strengthen its position as a leader in the Limburg region. For decades, this fund has been backed by Limburg companies, students, alumni, local and regional governments, and private donors.
