Prof. Rainer Goebel appointed member of KNAW

21th May 2014

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has appointed 17 new members. Among them is prof. dr. Rainer Goebel, Chief Scientist and Technical Officer at Scannexus and Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Maastricht University. Members of KNAW, leading scientists from all disciplines, are nominated by peers from within and outside the Academy.

Rainer Goebel (1964) has conducted breaking ground research in the fields of cognitive neuroscience and brain imaging. He is the developer of the fMRI data analysis software tool “brainvoyager”, which allows for real-time visualization of brain activity and of parts of the brain. This gives, for instance, patients suffering from depression or Parkinson’s disease the possibility of treatment through neurofeedback based on fMRI data from their own brains.

The KNAW has around 500 members, divided between its Humanities and Sciences divisions. Members are appointed for life. The new KNAW members will be installed during a ceremony at the Academy’s Trippenhuis on Monday, 8 September 2014.
